Although this is a developing story, here are the facts so far about this recall:

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found that ranitidine may contain a carcinogen (a cancer-causing chemical). This medication is also known as Zantac.
  • The carcinogen is N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) and it has previously been found in some blood pressure medications.
  • The FDA is still investigating the levels of the carcinogen in ranitidine.
  • In the meantime, some drug manufacturers have recalled their ranitidine products.

Your Next Steps

Upper Endoscopy: This is also known as an EGD. This test helps to diagnose conditions (and rule out other possible problems) by examining the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum.

LINX®: The LINX® system is a revolutionary approach to reflux disease. The strength of the magnets on the ring keep the lower esophageal sphincter closed. Your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is a muscle that opens and closes, allowing food to enter or stay in the stomach. By supporting this muscle, it can restore a natural barrier to stomach acid.

When you swallow, LINX® temporarily opens to allow food and liquid to enter your stomach. The magnetic attraction closes the sphincter immediately after you are done swallowing.

Alternative Options

Your doctor might recommend alternative medications that contain a different active ingredient, if you need it. Lifestyle changes can also help to reduce instances of heartburn, like avoiding large and fatty meals, spicy foods, and alcohol.

Even though this is a developing update, it can still make families feel uneasy if they have Zantac in the house for heartburn symptoms. Our doctors are here to help you navigate your next steps with comfort and ease.
